Nanfangao is a village derived from the fishing industry. For nearly one hundred years, people came from all over the island to establish a base here and sail out to sea. Out there on the vast ocean, faith was what anchored them. The people of Nanfangao believed that Mazu could protect the people out on the ocean, and the faithful who gathered here from abroad prayed for their safety. And so religion and fishing became the pillars of Nanfangao. In the eyes of Charlene Man, faith was the simplest and most unsophisticated. These various faiths tucked in the creases of everyday lives in Nanfangao, religious or otherwise, was uncovered by her and depicted in her works.
